When to use dispute letters
Use a dispute letter when there is information on your credit report that you believe is inaccurate. The dispute process is established by FCRA section 611.
Common reasons to dispute:
- The Date of First Delinquency is wrong (re-aging)
- The account is past the 7-year fall-off date
- The balance shown is incorrect
- The account is not yours
- The account is a duplicate of another account
- The status is inaccurate (e.g., showing as unpaid when paid)

After you send a dispute
The credit bureau has 30 days to investigate (sometimes extended to 45 days for specific reasons). They will contact the furnisher and either:
- Update the account based on what the furnisher reports
- Remove the account if the furnisher cannot verify
- Notify you that the account was verified
You will receive a written response with the results.
If the response is "verified" but you believe the verification was inadequate:
- Re-dispute with additional information or evidence
- File a complaint with the CFPB
- Consult a consumer protection attorney
